I will never get the strategy right for this one! :-)
Congratulations to K3CR for a great score! Never heard
anything but South America on 10. No US stations heard
and certainly no Europe.
Thanks to John Evans, N3HBX, for letting me invade his basement
again. It's a great opportunity for me to be able to use such
a great station. WAE CW is my favorite contest, but SSB is
a lot of fun too.
I had two nice suprises. One, 4S7VK called in during a run. No
points, but I think that it's an all-time new one for me! Two,
G1IOO called in and told me that I was behind my pace from last
year. I guess somebody does actually look at these reports. Too
bad he was absolutely right! :-)
There were a couple of major lessons learned this weekend.
1. Just because I've used an Orion a couple of times on CW
DOES NOT mean I can use one on SSB. I never did quite get the
AGC and NR figured out. One time, I thought the setup was
hopeless and swapped radios to the FT1000MP. Then, I found
out that splatter just sounds different on the Orion and, in
fact, copy was better on the Orion. I ended up changing
frequencies.
2. I have got to figure out how to quickly set up a small
receiving antenna for 80 as a guest operator. I guess I'll
try an EWE. I've never had any success with the flag or
pennant. Beverages need a lot of space and get in the way
of lawn mowers! :-) I ended up being an alligator on 80.
My apologies to the stations I couldn't pull out of the noise.
I got off to a slow start. I don't really know why, but I
never made it up. I really stuck to the grind on 80 Saturday
night, and it shows in the thirty multipliers.
I still have a lot to learn about effectively using the second
radio, especially on SSB, and off-time strategy.
Here's a bunch of statistics/numbers:
