Comments:
Did this contest from my summer QTH on the coast of Maine (FN53). Only could do
one day (Saturday). In general I found conditions to be poor and the contest to
be less fun than the past few years. Looks like this will feel like a VHF
contest for the next few years. Rig here was an ICOM 756 ProII running 100W to
a stacked 5-over-5 combination (based on the Optibeam OB11-3) at 42 and 85 feet
(14m and 28m). Software was Writelog on an IBM laptop with the MK-1100
multi-keyer.
With apologies to long-ago contest summaries in QST, always enhanced with a
cartoon from W1CJD, here?s my ?soapbox-in-a-box? view of the contest:
Had propagation to EU and some AF from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, but not
widespread. Didn?t work a single SM, OH, LA ? no northern EU at all. Had the
rx pre-amp on most of the time ? signals were weak in general. Didn?t work a
single Russian and heard very few Russian or CIS callsigns. Delighted to be
called by 5X1X after a CQ. Lots of SA and they made the contest interesting ?
love those Argentine contest callsigns! K5GO is a beacon and must be able to
work whatever he wants, 24x7. Band shut down hard to EU by 1-2 PM local on
Saturday afternoon. Sorry that the TO4E guys weren?t on ? at least I never
found them. Not much from OC ? happy to work 3D2YU on CW and SSB, but never did
catch KH6 and didn?t work any VK. Band shut down hard about an hour after
sunset (sunset was at 1600 local) with not a single JA QSO but then had a very
pleasant Sporadic E opening to the Midwest and Southeast US, as well as a late
afternoon kicker to ZL. Should have seen the Sporadic E coming when I worked
EA4WF at 2053Z and he was LOUD ? way too late for F2 and sounding like a
six-meter EU station in June on E-skip.
