Comments:
Great contest, wish I would have finished it out. Congrats to
the winners, and thanks to all the DX guys for getting on. The
ARRL DX is a unique contest because everyone is looking for us!
The Asian openings suffered from here due to the solar disturbance
earlier in the week. 10 meters to JA was almost non-existant.
15 was decent, but not much out of the Pacific Rim besides JA.
It is hard to know how the bands were on Friday night because after
0230z they were pretty much obliterated with snow static. There was
a nice polar opening on 20 on Sat night that made things interesting.
And working a few Euro's on 160 was a plus.
Kind of hard to concentrate on getting ready for the contest with
the TV weather guys calling for a huge storm. All the computer
simulations kept showing this big freezing rain cloud hanging right
over my house for about 24 hours. Had visions of watching all this
stuff I put up over the last few years turning into weather vanes ...
It didn't happen, but the weather was definitely a factor for me in
this contest. The wind was constant -- 30 MPH all the time and gusting
a lot higher. My sidemounted 20 meter yagis were casualties -- I
gave them the ability to slip by design (with prop pitch rotors you
definitely want that) but not this much! The low antenna was constantly
drifting to point SE. I thought the middle one was holding pretty
well, but it must have gotten looser sometime Sat night, because it
was going wherever it wanted to after that.
The Sat afternoon runs were interesting -- I left a window open
and was constantly turning the rotor to try to get the beam pointed
back at EU, and everytime I looked back it it was off! It also greatly
increased my anxiety level watching my poor antennas twisting and
rocking in that gale ...
We got very heavy snow on Fri night that wiped out the bands for about
3 hours 0230 - 0530z. At one point I drifted into our living room
to check out the weather radar, because trying to hear the stuff coming
back to my CQ's on 40 on the 160m beverage wasn't working all that great.
The storm kept the noise floor on 80m high enough that I could never
CQ there.
I ended up quitting at 0730z on Sat night, due to anxiety over the
storm more than anything. I think my wife appreciated it -- the snow
drift right outside our garage had made her a captive! Let's see what
Mother Nature cooks up for us on SSB ...
