Comments:
It WAS to be a great weekend - plenty of operators, new 3L 40M yagi, amplifiers
working, etc. Our excuses include a violent thunderstorm creating heavy QRN,
winds that were high enough (guestimated to be about 80-90 MPH with tornados in
the area) to sheer a 7/16" Grade 8 bolt that pinned the 40M yagi resulting in a
twisted off coax, loss of electricity, along with the poor propagation that
everyone endured.
All this pales in comparison to the ice storm a week later that broke every
antenna except for the 80M Bobtail. Two days after the ice storm, Kevin found
a chunk of ice off a 40M element that had been laying on the ground for over a
day in 50+ degree weather and it was still over 1.5 inches thick. The ice was
heavy enough that it straightened out eye bolts used in boom trusses. Pictures
can be seen at http://briefcase.yahoo.com/wa5rtg
It was kinda like having a bad round of golf, but making a birdie on the last
hole; Sunday's propagation was good on the high bands and it just makes you
want to come back with something bigger with better engineering the next time.
YagiStress will get a good workout again.
Element trusses will be in order for the 55 pound 40M elements that should have
been good for over 100 MPH or about 7/8 inch of radial ice.
Despite the adversities, we had a good time and look forward to getting back in
shape for the third weekend in February.
