SeaQ Maui became available 3 days before the contest. I flew over on Hawaiian
Airlines from LAX and arrived in OGG just 45 minutes before the contest. Ran
into a few problems setting up a laptop with CT953 (no keying). We finally
broke out another tower computer, big monitor, and keyboard. We had to move
a lot of stuff around with wires everywhere. Couldn't interface the FT1000MP
without the "radio timeout" message and default to 20 meters. So finally went
with a basic computer logger. Worked fine. Antennas were an A4S @ 50 ft,
40-2CD @ 50 ft, and an 80 meter 1/4 wave sloper that KH6TO installed years
ago and works fairly well. This is the third trip to SeaQ Maui and still
haven't figured out the propagation. As everyone laments, runs are almost
nonexistent with low power until Europe shuts down to the east coast. It
is pretty exciting to see 3 and 4 contacts a minute in the log when the
runs get going. A lot of noise and weak signals on 80 meters. The best
DX on 80 was A61AJ with a good signal. Also working FY5KE and HC8N on 80
pumped me up. Very difficult to work Europe, especially with a long call
sign like mine. When I would S&P, only 1 out of 5 stations would get my
call without a repeat. I would like to publicly thank AD1C for putting
my call sign first in the KH6 lookup in the master.dta file, kind of like
being "aa aabco, inc" in the yellow pages!!! I may have broken an old
low power record for KH6 which makes it all worthwhile. That flare really
killed the bands for awhile. It was like no antenna on the receiver, just
a hiss! Terry and Donna (KH6SQ) were great hosts. After the contest, I
jumped on a Delta flight back to LAX arriving Monday at 5 a.m. and then
drove up to Lone Pine where I promptly went to sleep for 14 hours!! I was
in contestitis remission for a couple years, but at 59 years old, it has
returned. Does one ever get cured? Kurt, W6PH
