Comments:
Well gee, if I'd known conditions would be so good from here I would have made
more preparation than figuring out which coax went to the Mosley and where my
microphone was stashed...
I actually intended to do an all-band effort, but the U.S. opening at the
beginning of the contest was the best I have seen in the past 5 years so I just
stayed with 10m. Conditions were so good, in fact, that I worked very few JA's
the first day -- they were all working Europeans (which I couldn't hear). The
second evening was much better for me, since the JA's DIDN'T have the great EU
opening. The same thing happened toward the U.S. the second morning. I
typically have to wait until EU starts dying out to the U.S. before I can
establish any rate because I'm off the back of everyone's antenna. The poor
conditions made people look elsewhere, and I (as well as ZS6EZ) benefitted.
This contest was a lot of fun, but I got more sleep than I should have. I went
to bed the first night with the band wide open, simply because I couldn't work
anyone. JA and Asia were all working Europe, with me off the side, and I
couldn't penetrate the QRM. When the long path to the U.S. and Caribbean fired
up, as usual, I couldn't work anyone there through Europe, either. I may have
screwed myself out of the zone 36 multiplier by sleeping these hours, as I
typically have several hours of propation late at night to west Africa. It was
a little harder to tell this year due to the lack of a major operation from
zone 36. The only other zone missed was 40, which wasn't a surprise. It takes
an act of God to work zone 40 from here on any band, and 10m is the worst.
It's happened once in all the contests combined since 1996. Zone 2 is almost
as bad, but this year was well represented and I actually did work several in
that zone. Thanks to the guys who made it available! ZS6EZ tracked me down
and worked me on scatter to save me from missing zone 38, another very tough
zone from the mid-west Pacific.
I have to say that almost nothing I've learned about propagation from KH8
applied this year. The "trick" openings didn't happen, and the time frames
were all skewed on the others. I worked YU1AU at 2250z, near the end of the
contest, while beaming straight east down the equator (hoping for zone 36).
This is about as likely as working Europe on 160 at noon time from Texas.
I was terribly frustrated by the single antenna and "manual" rotator, but hope
to have that fixed by CW time. I just wish the same conditions would prevail
for the CW version of the contest (with my apologies in advance to the
higher-latitude stations : ). For those of you who missed KH8, I'm
sorry...but I missed it too.
Congratulations again to all you big scorers, hope to see ya in a couple of
weeks. Cheers,
Don
