Now I know what it must be like to get out like K1AR does every
contest!
Wow, what a contest. This was a 48 hour sprint, from beginning to
end. Rates were so good that there were times when I thought I only
made a "few" QSOs on a band, only to look up and see that I had worked
more than a hundred.
I've never heard 40 this good. Mike's high antenna really performed
well at EU sunrise. Another dominant band for me was 15 -- Mike's 4
high stack is just a killer.
My favorite time was running Asians on 20 meters between 01 and 0300
on Saturday night. The band sounded quiet, and I felt like I was the
only guy running on the band. Things were so good to Asia that I
didn't really settle in to CQ on 40 until 0400z or so.
Its an amazing thing about the CQ WW -- there were stations on, going
full bore, that I never heard or worked. Guys like C4A, VU2WAP, and
many others.
My operating really suffered from too long of a layoff from SOAB. I
lacked the good decision making instincts that are needed to get a
good multiplier in this contest. Lots of bonehead mistakes, like only
working HC8N on two bands.
160 and 80 were lousy here. Lots of man-made QRN. There's been about
10,000 new homes built in W9RE's township in the last 5 years, and
what used to be farmland is now suburbia.
Thanks to Mike for use of his world class station. Its dreams of
conditions like these that motivate us all to put all this hardware up
in the first place.
