Story
-----
I hadn't done this one seriously since about 1985 or so when I tried it
from W3GM's place. It was fun then and it was fun this time....well, sort
of fun. The first night is awesome and then the rates start falling
through the floor. It's a little like a Sweepstakes for 160.
Matt put up a full-size 1/4 wave vertical (a nice piece of work..you have
to see it....web page coming soon) this year. Also nice work by Krassy
K1LZ on the insulators.....you really have to see those to believe it!
Krassy is a master in the machine shop! So I thought it would be good to
get on in some of the 160 'tests to see how the antenna plays. We'll be
on Multi-Op in the CQ 160 CW 'test.
I started out with decent rate....a 100 first hour followed by 90,83,90,99
hours. Cool! Had the occasional European call in, some with excellent
signals. G0IVZ was the first EU and pretty loud as I recall. P40P called
in within the first 10 minutes for a mult. I turned out to be the only
mult from South America.
OY9JD and TF3IRA called in for some cool mults. The first night EU was
spotty until about 0400Z when EU sunrise started to kick in. 0500-0730Z
were particularly good to Europe. Condx to Europe were horrible Saturday
night.
I was going to quit early on Sunday morning but decided it would be cool
to make it to 1300 Q's so I kept pressing on. It's amazing to work guys
during the day on 160. The vertical makes this possible. Horizontally
polarized antennas don't work as well during the daylight hours.
Hats off to K1ZM for a fine score from his Cape Cod location (you have to
see the pictures of that place!). He's just a couple of hundred feet from
the Atlantic Ocean. He's really loud into Europe from there! It was nice
to beat all the multi-op guys though!
You have to be a little warped to operate all of this contest....I didn't
quite stay on for the whole thing...long enough to feel like a lunatic but
not long enough to put myself out of commission for Monday. :-)
Thanks for all the Q's.
