Well, this contest broke 1995's record by 100 qsos. I wasn't able to
op last year because my equipment was in the shop. We started
operating on Friday, but it just wasn't productive. The next day, we
raised our 20M dipole above the house. BIG difference. I made 48 Q's,
which equaled my 1995 total, in just this one day. That nite, I got
plenty of sleep, in anticipation of operating the next day. Once I
arrived, Bob gave me the grand tour of the station. I was very
nervous, and very anal about tuning and touching things. But, after
becoming familiar with the equipment, I felt comfortable. I began
running a nice rate, and by 2PM, was over 100. One of the highlights
of the contest was the incredible 10M opening. I worked FS5PL (Thanks
for the comment on the W9XT card), and a ton of South Americans. New
Zealand, Africa, the West Coast, and others were booming in! I got a
taste of 10M contesting, and I'm really liking it! We ended the
contest, with 148 Q's, which may not be much, but it was a big deal
for me. I like to improve in contests, and I achieved my goal. Here's
a breakdown of the antennas:
20-10- Tribander up 20ft mounted "Field Day" style. What turned out
to be an error of pointing the antenna, turned out to be not a bad
thing to have it pointed on the ZL boys.
80-40- Dipole at 30ft. This antenna is one that really works well.
We even got first place in something! Worked all Neighbors' Phone!
In conclusion, I'd especially like to thank Bob, WG9L for letting me
use his station. I'd also like to thank him for trusting me to his
Alpha 78 amp. The thing worked like a champ!
