If you worked us (even outside the contest), can you help us with your
comments?
Some new antennas were tried on this expedition, can you take a minute to
let us know how strong our signal was?
1. How hard or easy was it to find and work us?
2. How was our signal compared to other Caribbean stations, Central
American, or Northern South American stations?
Many thanks for sparing a minute to help us evaluate our antenna selection
strategy.
Best regards,
Kenny, K2KW (please Email comments to ken.silverman@airtouch.com)

There are three things to remember in contesting: location, location, and
location! As this contest effort got started in California, the obvious
choice for a contest location was NOT California, but somewhere in the
sunny Caribbean. Months of research went into finding a great location,
and we feel it paid off. We found a great QTH right on the coast with an
open salt water shot towards the USA. The downside of this QTH was it had
never been used by a ham radio contest group before. Thus we had to bring
EVERYTHING with us.
Highlights:
- Meeting JE3MAS, and having him operate with us. Mas is a wonderful op
- Team contesting with K2KW, N6TV, JE3MAS, W4SO, N6BT & Bonnie
- Finding out we picked a great radio location
- Seemingly endless QSOs on 80 and 160m
- Moving VY1JA from 40 to 160 to 80 within 10 minutes. Thanks Jay!
- N6BT's great selection of antennas
- Thinking we could break the M/2 record once we saw the first nights
results on the low bands
- Amazing performance from the verticals, especially on 20m (the 20m verts
were consistantly 1 to 5 S-Units better than the inverted-V Yagi @ 40')
- The Jamaican staff and home cooking at the villa
- Mmmm, that great BBQ Jamaican Jerk at the roadside stands!
- Likely breaking the DX ALL time QSO records on 160 and 80, and
breaking the DX M/2 QSO records on 40, and 20
- Coming within 400 QSOs of the M/2 record - with no 10m opening!
(the current M/2 record by 6D2X had 1000+ QSOs on 10m)
- The new Icom 756 worked great in a multi-transmitter environment
- The new FinnFet expedition amp worked like a champ
- The most fun and relaxing contest expedition I have been on.
- Likely winning the 1997 M/2 DX class!
Lowlights:
- Lugging 3 complete stations and lots of antennas with us to Jamaica
- Being stopped by customs in both Jamaica and on return to the USA
- 30+ mph winds (peaking 50+) every day except the 1st day we arrived
- Continuous 40++ mph winds the Friday afternoon of the contest, and
tremendous salt build up on everything; lost nearly the first 2.5
hours of the contest on 40 mtrs repairing the 40 driven element that
was actually in salt spray most of the day - oh well.
- N6BT making rounds of the antennas every 3 hours the first night to
make sure they were still standing and working due to the constant
high winds and salt spray build-up
- High winds super-saturating the support ropes and radials with salt,
(read - many RF burns by bumping into them during the night)
- Frying the Alpha SWR circuit minutes before the start of the contest.
We thought we lost the amp, but we got it operational with an outboard
SWR meter an hour into the contest.
- No 10m opening cost us the M/2 record :-(
