Once again, a remarkably good weekend for the bottom of the cycle.
10 was nicely open into the WRTC area, and to the east coast later in the
evening, and even a few second burst of a CT1xx (I think) was heard from
Europe.
15 was open to Europe (barely) for quite a few hours both at the beginning and
end of the period, and to the south at other times. Not much from the Pacific
or Ja on 15 that I noticed.
20 was good, as expected. So good that I never got to 40 in time to work many
Europeans....if they were workable.
80 and 160 were very, very noisy with static until the hour or so, a major
storm went by (had to take about a 45 minute forced break) but after it went
back, the static levels were zilch (NO the receiver front end didn't go south
with the storm!) and only then was I able to get a few good mults (and DX) on
80. Not much on 160 but a few checks got some of the easy zones and even a ZL.
Great signals from W1AW/3 on all 6 bands.
This was a bit of an experiment, having just interfaced the FT 1000mp to the
computer with TRlog and using the band map feature for the first time. Simple
to config and worked flawlessly. It really is GREAT and certainly improves
efficiency for s&p operation. No need for all those scraps of paper keeping
track of who is on what frequency, etc. The only paper trail was to keep track
of the WRTC guys, but that was abandoned quickly, took too much time.
Speaking of the WRTC event, it did seem that the bands were quieter and a run
spot was easier to find with all the competitors and judges not operating from
home! Other than one WRTC operator that really needed his morning coffee
(badly!) they all sounded like the smooth ops they are.......
