I was supposed to be in Indianapolis for the big race this weekend,
but took sick and stayed home, so I played on the radio a little. At
first, I was planning on my usual effort of working a few stateside
guys so I could have, say 100 Qs and 100 mults for zero points, but
was calling CQ on 20m when a VE6 called me...I almost didn't go back
to him, but figured I shouldn't be so rude. So, I made a few more Qs
just for the heck of it off and on over the weekend. Went fishing
Sunday afternoon and caught an 18" rainbow trout...that count for
extra multipliers?
A whole lot of folks couldn't figure out the callsign...many thought
it was AA9BGA...which doesn't exist! It took several tries with a
lot of stations, and some I'm sure probably never got it. The
europeans seemed to take it at face value better than a lot of the
stateside guys...maybe they're better informed - or better ops? I
will admit to sending the call poorly the few times I did it by
hand...so I changed to keyboard sending. I'm really glad I don't
have a 6 in my call! Next contest (IARU?) I'll probably use
AA400GA...I think that may be less confusing even if it's longer.
