Well, I've not encountered any DPL around here. Most agencies in this area
are using VHF, either simplex or repeaters, with PL _or_ they've gone to
800MHz trunked systems. Consequently, I've got a Uniden Trunktracker
scanner on order to handle my scanning needs.
However, you raise a valid point.
I hinted at the issue of price. That may be less of an issue than I
thought. For the past year, the price differential between the FT-50 and
the FT-51 at most of the mail order ham radio stores has been around $125.
I've been hoping that the FT-51 would come down in price, especially since
the FT-50 and VX-1 have been getting a lot of attention. Well, it's finally
happened. Both AES and HRO have lowered their FT-51 prices to the point
where it is only $40 more than the FT-50.
It's going to come down to what features do I really want. That decision,
for me, has always favored the FT-51. But, until now, I've had to consider
the FT-50 because of the price difference.
As for the VX-1...I figured my remark would raise a few hackles. There is
definitely a place in the market for radios like the VX-1. The
manufacturers, Yaesu, Alinco, Standard, and Icom alike, have been wise to
respond to that market demand. But the user interface and the low power
output make it a radio that doesn't interest me.
Thanks to all for their input!
