Many AM broadcast towers are not resonant -- 5/8 wavelength is common. A few capacitors and inductors bring the tower to 50j0 for 50-ohm coax. No baluns are used. These antennas are fed with transmitters that are a lot less tolerant of reflected power than most ham rigs. Broadcast antennas have to be very efficient, especially if you are paying the power bill.
