Dave: I have one of several tall crank up towers built by U.S.Towers. It is
131 feet tall with a load rating of 30sf in an 80mph wind. It has digital
readout of height, an anemometer to lower it in severe winds, and each
section has 3 lift cables to the next section. I have never seen a crankup
that used more than 1 lift cable between sections. Each section is 30 ft
tall. The mast is 2 7/8 chrome moly . The winch has a level wind scheme to
lay the cables smoothly.
If this sounds like a dream tower, it is, in my opinion. I believe UST
built 3 or 4 of them and mine was delivered in 2001. K7ZV was instrumental
in getting UST to build these and his supports a 3 el 80m yagi.
Several years ago UST contacted me about upgrading the tower by replacing
the aluminum cable pulleys with steel ones and using higher grade bolts on
the pulleys. They sent 2 workers and their tools to my place at no expense
to me, paid their air fare, motel, and rental car and did the job in a few
hours.
I am sure that everyone wants to know what it cost. I am sworn not to
reveal that but it was listed in their catalog a year or 2 later at 29k as I
remember. I expect it would be quite a bit more now.
