The reels would work well for non-climbing applications, or perhaps once
you've reached "altitude", but I would think they would be cumbersome to
climb with- especially if obeying 100% fall arrest tie off.

The obvious benefit of the reels is limited fall distance (9"-12" versus up
to 6' with a conventional fall arrest lanyard.
