So, getting to the question: What degradation in performance should I be
expecting to see by virtue of not having the balun or hairpin?

Guys,
Remember what the function of the hairpin is - it is an impedance
transformation component. Check the ARRL handbook. A multi-element yagi
antenna often
has a very low source impedance. Yagi Designs using the Haripin matching
technique have slightly short driven element thus the input reactance is
Capacitive
(negative) and adding the Inductance of the hairpin creates a "tuned" circuit
and transforms the original low impedance feed to more nearly 50 ohms which
matches nicely with the balanced feed that Telrex uses (Balun).
