A couple of notes:
One addition to your explanation:
a Minute of Longitude distance varies by the cosine of the latitude.
For instance, at the equator a minute of longitude is one NAUTICAL mile.
(since the cosine of the 0 degree latitude = 1)
At the North Pole, a minute of longitude distance is equal to 1nm x the
cosine of the latitude = 1 x cosine of 90 degrees = 0 nm.
