Hello Bill,

Interesting subject and know a little about after selling telescoping
towers for the last 14 or so years.

Wire rope as you pointed out should NOT lubricated with any kind of
oil. Three companies that I know of make a special lube just for wire
rope. Some lube sprays that people purchase covers the entire outside
of the wire rope with a black or brown horrible coating. This is wrong,
looks terrible, picks up dirt and on some tower models will actually
allow the wire rope to slip on the drum.

Rust on wire rope usually starts on the inside out and it is best to get
a lubricant that penetrates the outside to get to the core. Since each
strand on the cable rubs or moves slightly upon use, the lubricant
reduces wear and extends the life on the cable. The trick is to get the
spray inside the wire rope as much as possible. It was suggested by the
manufacturer of one brand that the spray be put on at a pulley location
where the wire rope is more open to receiving a better dose.

Some tower manufacturers say not to spray but may not be aware of the
special lubes made just for wire rope. Our company has been selling the
Whitmore brand for over 10 years and IT WORKS and we sell a lot both
here and overseas.

Hope my little hint preserves your tower cable at least until the
warranty is up. (just kidding)
