Several years ago I put up a christmas tree of Wilson 4 element yagis
for 10, 15 and 20 meters. Wilson provided some neat poly/rubber caps to
fit over the ends of the elements and some big ones to cover the ends of
the booms. When the antennas came down, I was very surprised to
discover that two of the booms had filled with water and during a hard
freeze had actually been split for an inch or so in a couple of spots!
Since that experience, I have been content to leave both element and
boom ends open. The potential added weight from the occasional wasp
nest is far "outweighed" by a boom full of water!
