Friends, Members of the Contest/DXing Community:
We're getting an Address!
Many of you are aware of our cinderella story of a
conversion of an
Army MARS station at the former Ft. Ord, to a Amateuur Radio Contest
Station under the auspices of the Marina Amateur Radio Association (MARA)
and the Marina Department of Parks and Recreation.
Those of you who don't, here it is in a nutshell: A 10
acre parcel of
hilltop property on the Monterey Peninsula, with a complete HF station
(minus transmitters) has been undergoing conversion to be a Multi-Multi
Contest Station for the past 4 years, mostly in the last 2. We have the
hilltop and hillside antenna farm, clear acreage for 1000 feeet in almost all
directions, soundproof operating shacks, lounge, bathroom, showers,
security fencing, and more..(And the blessing of the City Fathers!) Look for
an upcoming article about it in QST.
Well, MARCS (Marina Amateur Radio Contest Station) is
finally on
the agenda in Marina for acquiring a street name. Andrew, WV1B, came up
with the brilliant suggestion for a name shure to bring a smile to hams all
around the world: Marina Amateur Radiio Contest Station
599 DX Drive
Marina CA 93933
Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?
What I would like to do, is to assure the Marina City Fathers, that their
actions will be welcomed among the local and international ham community,
by having hams mail in to the Marina City manager, letters of approval of the
street name assignment. You can also mention how nice an oppportunity
it is to convert the old MARS station to recreational amateur radio use.
This
conversion is serving as a model for other similar conversions that are
becoming available with the base closure process, world-wide. This is a
community HF station, and we welcome particpation by any and all hams.
It is so big, that it is quite underutilized at the present.
So, please send in your letters (or e-mail; but, letters
are preferred) of
support, to the Marina City Manager, John Longley, at the address below.
There are two deadlines that should be used for sending in letters: The
first,
is by (before) the next meeting of the Marina Parks and Recreation
(Community Services) Commission, that occurs the first Wednesday of the
Month (Sept 3) After that deadline, the next one is approx 1 month later,
before the city council meeting, on October 7.
