Marc & Ed,
You will find that the SteppIR beam will dramatically effect the tuning of the
shunt fed tower tower. I retract (home) all the elements before loading on
160M. That way there is consistent top loading for the tower from the antenna
boom only. I have been running 1.5KW to a 160M (130 ft tall) shunt fed tower
with a MonstIR this way for some time with no apparent consequences to the
antenna. Only time will tell if this works out in the long run. I suspect it
will be OK since the antenna boom is well connected to the mast and all the
control cables are in very close proximity to the boom. In my case the control
cables pass up through the center of the mast and only come out through the
mast at the antenna. There is a 'DC ground' VHF antenna on top of the mast
above the MonstIR.
