I know what you mean Eddy.
Before supper last night I went into the shack and heard a F5 [ forget the
full call ] on 160 at a solid 519 on the inverted V, one and a half hours
before local sunset. Not a peep on the Inverted L though [ and that has 120
1/4 wave radials under it ] so I listened for a bit before supper.
Apparently no one on the east coast heard him calling.
Also, last Sunday evening, I worked CN2R on SSB, and got a 58 report while
he was a solid 57 here. Every few minutes the band would do a slow burn for
about 40 -50 seconds and he would go to a 31 and then back to 58 again. I
managed to work him on the crest of one of the waves. Don't know what his
power was but mine was only 100 watts.
So far the season is full of promise, compared to the last few years.
Keeping fingers crossed....

Yesterday was absolutely phenomenal on 160...!
It all started at 5:00 PM local time, with G3ZES calling CQ. Later on, I
heard OM3RM, OE8SKQ, CN2R, HA8BE (589!), and OM3BH. Some of the signals were
unbelievably strong---could hardly believe I was listening to Top Band...
The latter was the ONLY station I actually managed to WORK, however! Hi Hi.
Hardy recently ran the specs of my grounded half loop through a computer
programme he has---turns out the design makes for a very effective dummy
antenna, & not much else in the transmitting department. Anyway, I tore it
down this morning, replacing it with a temporary inverted "L".
That grounded half loop sure was a FB receiving antenna, though...I'll miss
it ONLY for that.
