That's what confused me.  I knew the 544 had no switched calibrator function 
but it sounds just like the calibrator in the analog Triton IV.

that most likely was the calibrator, they sound almost exactly the same

From my experience in repair of these old Ten Tec, that’s what I found to be 
the problem. 

A simple test, unplug the power to the display, and see if the signal goes away
