Make a note of noise levels in the cabin, no antenna. Now grab some clip
leads and try it with the car battery. Car off. Away from the cabin. No
antenna.
If you still have noise, make a note of how it behaves with the attenuation
in and out. Try preamp for each attenuation state. You''ll have four
columns. You can also set the radio for split with Tx frequency in 80m band
and see if noise is more or less. Also not the frequency and distance
between the birdies. All this will give an idea as to where in the radio
the noise might be coming from.
For TX. Check for a short or open feed line. Try 20 and 40 and see if the
antenna loads any better. If it does, you've got some antenna work to do :-)
