Carl, here's what I told Rob when he said the same thing to me.
Some people (me for instance) have a hearing problem in that we cannot hear
much of anything in the presence of moderate ambient noise. If we reduce
the RF gain slowly, not much happens but then suddenly the desired signal
pops up out of nowhere.
I have a really bad problem working the booth at hamfests. The customer
across the table from me is nearly shouting at me and I can't understand a
word he's saying. My buddy working the booth with me is often 10' behind me
on the other side of the booth and he understands what my customer said.
It has nothing to do with radio technology. It is hearing defect. For us,
it is as though the signal to noise ratio suddenly improves - a lot. The
way the RF gain works in Ten-Tec radios is a big advantage for me.

I said this before and I will say this again. Rob Sherwood agrees with me
on this. And I know I am going to get beat up on this but I'm tired of
hearing wrong things about RF gain.
RF gain has absolutely no effect on signal to noise ratio. Reducing RF gain
reduces the noise. But it also reduces the signal in the same proportion.
It is useful to reduce the RF gain in situations where the signal is much
higher than the noise so that noise is not heard in between transmissions.
But to hear the very weakest signals, the RF gain must be high enough to
hear some noise.
