I have never owned, or used. a PowerMite, but I built, and still own, an
HW-8. I've owned and HW-7 and also owned a very early Argonaut (Bought used
and not in good shape) and I own an Argosy II.
My comments on the two Heathkits:
The HW-8 is loads of fine to use and a great performer, albeit somewhat
plagued with microphonics. I would consider selling my soul before I sold
my little HW-8.
The HW-7 wasn't bad but didn't have the band coverage of the HW-8 and really
suffered from microphonics. To the extent that just brushing the case would
be picked up and repeated in the headset. I bought the rig as a backup to
my HW-8 but didn't keep it long.
I believe that the microphonics are a direct result of the direct conversion
receiver. In any case the trait was shared with the old Argonaut. My
Argonaut took a hit when a power supply went south. I gave to a friend who
is trying to make it live again.
Just my comments --- others may agree or not!
