A possible place to look at might be the CMOS setup of the computer.
Accessed by a certain key or key combination at computer startup.
The computer usually says something like "Press <XXX> to access Setup".
The setting of concern is somewhere under "Advanced" - if the COM ports
are set to AUTO, it may be better to force set them where they really belong.
Has helped me.
WARNING: messing with CMOS settings may make your computer/data unusable if
you don't know what you are doing!
