Earthlink provides an optional whitelisting feature in its spam
blocking service. For those using it, only email from addresses in a
users online address book is allowed through. Other mail gets a reply
message like you got, allowing you to request that the user put you in
their address book, so your email will go through. Since spam usually
has a faked return address, spammers can't make that request.
