David,

The bypass diodes built into the modules
can go bad (either failed open or failed
shorted), but this failure mechanism
would not create RFI from the DC output
of the module. PV modules with failed-open
bypass diodes are considered failed modules
because any partial shading of the cells in the
module effectively blocks current flow from
non-shaded cells.

Good luck with your search for RF-quiet
battery charge controllers and inverters.
There was some discussion on this list
earlier this year on this subject, especially
with regard to micro-inverters and optimizers,
which some hams have found to be
prodigious RFI generators.

I had read somewhere that diodes in the panels could sometimes go bad and get
leaky or something.

OK, so as long as RF doesn't get into the connecting wires the panels back to
the controller should be clean.

The next step would then be to identify an RFI-quiet controller/battery bank
manager, and inverter.

My south-facing shallow metal roof space is about 60 feel long and 24 feet
high, so I can arrange the

panels about any way I choose.

Thanks,

David,

The PV modules themselves are not noisy - from
the ad you linked it does not appear that
the pallet of panels is accompanied by an
inverter or micro-inverters. The PV modules
generate DC - it's the inverter/microinverters
that generate switching noise, which is radiated
by the module DC interconnect wiring and
possibly the AC wiring to the household load
center.

These are used but are said to be really well made and from the USA:

On sale they seem a good deal but not if they're noisy.

Thanks,
