It takes way way too long for my proper emails to be posted to this RFI
list. Yet I see others being posted in the mean time. Thus I must be
moderated. Based on my track record with many other sites and this one,
that restriction doesnt make any sense .....
Soooo ........... I give up ..... and pulling the plug on this user
forum and this will be my last email effort.

Subject: Mod Fix For Tecsun PL-660 Squelch Glitch

The PL660 has an annoying issue. When the signal is less than two or
three signal strength bars, the audio drops to a low level and goes
bassy. When the signal is in that trip area of signal strength trip
point, and is fading and strengthening going below and above that trip
level, the audio switches in and out of this designed in mode and is
very annoying. There is some audio distortion from that 'feature' too.
Only thing I can think of as the reason for that feature, is to fool the
listener into thinking this is a quieter radio when there is no signal
or a weak signal. Instead it destroys the intelligibility of weak
signals that would other wise be listenable.
The attached PDF file details how to do the 'Dynamic Squelch'
modification. I did use the switching arrangement, but because I always
leave the mod switched in, I would recommend that using the switching is
not needed once you become convinced the mod is working and very worth
while.
A Russian group with high interest in this radio has evolved several
mod's, with this one in my mind the most significant. A video of the
results for this mod is at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5W9cDiBoP0 and is named Tecsun PL-660
modified : Dynamic squelch (muting) disabled
That group is located at, and translated by Google:
http://www.radioscanner.ru/forum/topic42851-89.html
Run through the Google Translator at
http://translate.google.com/ by putting the url above in the left
box, and clicking on the google url in the right box, you get a translation.
You can now arrow forward and backwards, and jump to other pages. In
there you will find tons of information, photo's, schematic's, and block
diagrams about the PL-660.
Taking the radio apart and putting it back together takes more time than
doing the mod.
It is very worth while getting the mod done.
