Ron,
On a more serious note, I have had good luck using the wrist rocket,
1/4 oz lead sinker, and fishing line spool mentioned earlier. After a
couple of practice attempts in a field it's not that hard to get a feel
for how hard to pull back on the sling and where to aim...
As long as you keep the fishing line spool in front of you and facing
up I've never had a problem with the line snagging. I think a
conventional spinning reel or close faced reel would have problems
unwinding the line fast enough.
You could also probably find a way to hook up one of those bow reels
the archers use to spear carp along the Wisconsin River, they are
probably available for a reasonable price in a sporting goods store. I
know the ones with the large (8" or so) diameter work well, I've seen
some people using the Zebco 33 homebrew versions but I'm not sure how
well they work (I think the line would tend to snag on the catch at the
speed generated by a wrist rocket or compressed air paint gun). I'd shy
away from using the bow to actually shoot the line over the tree, even
with a field tip the arrow could do some unintentional damage coming
down.
