ELNEC Models for HF Bcast Arrays

Subject: ELNEC Models for HF Bcast Arrays

Does anyone out there know of any canned ELNEC models for HF broadcast type
arrays, such as curtains, etc? I've got a project at work where Im trying to
show how we could use ELNEC and IONSOUND to replace an aging $150,000 piece of
software, at a cost of $100 or so.

Also, anyone know of any DOS or UNIX software for inputting a lat/lon and
creating
creating a great circle bearing chart? I looked at Dayton but found no such
software, only a company selling expensive great circle beam charts as rotor
indicator overlays.

I was staying up in Columbus OH with friends so didn't get a chance to see too
many people at Dayton. How do I get to be rich and pay a company to install
a few thousand feet of towers in my back yard?

I understand that AA6TT gave a presentation on his station in
Colorado at one of the forums this year. If anyone can recall
some of the details, or has some information about it, I, for
one, would be interested in a summary. By the way, I understand
that he spent some big $$$$ putting this together. Who is this
guy, anyway? Did he win the lottery or something? .... ..

If by "chart" you mean a table of beam headings to all the prefixes,
several programs such as MiniProp, DXBASE, etc. will do that. However,
if what you want is a program that draws a great circle MAP centered on
any QTH, I have not found one that runs under DOS.

The best ham map software is Geoclock. It comes with a custom equidistant-
azimuthal map centered on your QTH. Nothing beats seeing the gray line
plotted in real time on a great circle map. You see immediately how much
of your signal is passing through light, dark, and gray. A bargain at
$60.

I didn't go to Dayton but is this what I heard from several of the guys
here in Colorado. Think the antenna stuff is accurate.

10 meters 4 - 8 el. yagis
15 meters 4 - 8 el. yagis
20 meters 3 (maybe 4) - 6 el. yagis
40 meters 2 - 3 el. yagis
80 meters 1 - 3 el. yagi
10/15/20 2 - large lp arrays

All antennas are DX Engineering except for the 80 which is a KLM.
All the stacks are vertical stacks and the lower antennas are turned by
TIC General rotating rings.

I have been told AA6TT was the owner/CEO/whatever of a fairly well known
record label in CA. He sold out and retired to Colorado near his wife's
family. I can think of better places to build a DX test superstation :-).

LTA Industries (Tim Duffy, K3LR) is selling transcripts of the antenna, DX
and contest forums. Just give them a call......I don't have the number
handy but it's in the NCJ and probably QST.

My QST came while I was away at Dayton and I was just scanning the
results of the Sweepstakes and noticed a few problems:

o p 111, col 3, second to last line: N6KT's name is not Bob, it
   is Rich

o p 111, col 3, bottom (cont.): this paragraph is a narrative of
the high power phone results, but as you turn to the next page
the continuing narrative is evidently about the low power CW results.
This is not intended as a criticism of writing style. It really looks
as though something is missing here.

 o p 113, photo at top:  the two men in the photgraph are WM4Z and N5CG;
N5CG's name is Dave, not Connie

Did anybody spot any other glitches? If so, please drop me an eline pointing
it out. I am finally motivated to write a letter to the League. Although
the situation with the contest writeups has gotten better, I believe there is
still room for some improvement.

So, did anyone get a chance to look at the new Icom HF rig (the one
all wrapped up in a package in the QST and CQ ads). If so, please
tell all!

Message-ID: <9204272200.AA03724@dxis.att.com>

I have been using CT version 7.25 and have only recently been
able to connect the computer to the IC-765 to pick up packet
spots and use Alt-F4 make the rig QSY. It's great! Only one
thing, though. I did a TEST spot using QSX to get VFOs A and B
split, which the radio took without a glitch. However, when I
did another Alt-F4 to get back to the "run" frequency, VFO A
did move back to the correct frequency, but the radio stayed
in split mode. Anybody else have this problem? Is this a bug
in version 7.25 or are my computer and IC-765 not communicating?
