Hi all,
As promised, a summary of the replies I received for antennas at a
contest site.
The best piece of advice I received was to get a copy of YTAD or
similar. This is freeware and can be downloaded from
ftp.cs.buffalo.edu/pub/ham-radio/qex the file you want is YTAD.ZIP.
What an eye-opener to see what the difference in stacking distances does
to the takeoff angle, depending on the surrounding terrain. For the
GI0KOW QTH, it appears that a stacking distance of about 40 feet is best
i.e. 90/50 feet for 20M. NOT what I expected. I was thinking wider than
that.
I asked would it be worth the hassle to stack a second 2el 40M yagi
below one which is at 100 feet. Unsurprisingly, some interesting and
contradictory remarks were obtained. Some said it's not worth the hassle
unless the top antenna is at 140' (1 wavelength). Others report having
good results with the top antenna at 105 feet. Running it through YTAD
shows a gain of about 1.5 dB can be obtained with a stack (100'/50') at
the main EU-US angles of 15-18 degrees. That could be VERY useful.
Now, 80M wire-yagis. Some suggested log-periodics. A 6-element vertical
log-periodic was tried last year, superb front-to-back. Nearly killed
the European QRM (in excess of 25 dB). Unfortunately, couldn't get it to
transmit any better than the dipole at 90 feet. The 700' beverage has
the same effect on receive, so the log is history.
One design which is looking interesting (a 2-element) is obtainable from
http://www.yccc.org/80mwirebeam.html. If it even comes close to the
signal from KC1XX, that should be good enough!!.
Another query, I may be way off base here, but will this work?
A 3-el yagi has a driving impedance of about 25 ohms. If a folded dipole
type driven element is used, I assume the impedance will increase by a
factor of four to 100 ohms. Can this be fed like a quad, i.e. a quarter
wave of 75 ohm coax, then 50 ohm the rest of the way to the shack? If it
can, this would save a lot of hassle trying to match the 20-25 ohms to
50 ohm coax. Answers on a postcard.... to my E-mail address.

Dave,
Your "antler and wire" contest seems to be almost a direct knock-off of
the Issaquah Amateur Radio Club "Crooked Stick and Rats Nest" contest.
This
was an annual event for many years, but died due to lack of interest about
three years ago.
Many hours of effort and almost no entries! It of course was on the 10
meter band to allow novice/tech participation, and therefore was subject to
the whims of the band.
Many years, we were not even able to work stations outside Washington
state.
I will mention it to the club members at Field Day and to the other club,
Maple Valley ARC, to which I belong.
Good Luck, and may you be innundated (sp?) with entries!

Those 1=d71 sixth-district call signs you'll be hearing July 13 and 14
are no mirage. The FCC has authorized 52 1=d71 call signs (W6A
through W6Z and K6A through K6Z), one for each team
competing in the second World Radiosport Team Championship
(WRTC). The call signs will be assigned to the WRTC teams by
random drawing a few hours before the event. Awards are
available for working WRTC stations.
First held in 1990, the WRTC this time will run as a =22sub-event=22 of
the IARU HF World Championship contest. The WRTC event runs
from 1200 UTC Saturday, July 13 until 0600 UTC Sunday, July 14
(the IARU contest will run another six hours). WRTC teams compete
as two-person, multi-single entries.
WRTC participants come from 30 different DXCC countries and were
chosen by national Amateur Radio organizations, contest clubs, and
an international panel of judges. Among their ranks are world record
holders in virtually every major HF contest. To provide a =22level playing
field,=22 all teams will operate from low-elevation sites in the San Franci=
sco =
Bay area, running 100 W. Each team will use a triband Yagi approximately
50 feet high for 10, 15, and 20 meters, and dipoles for 40 meters (WRTC
stations will not operate on 80 or 160 meters). By eliminating many of the
station and propagation variables normally associated with radio
contesting, the WRTC =22strives to present a meaningful competition in
which the winners can rightfully claim to be the best of the best,=22 =
according
to WRTC publicity chairman Rusty Epps, W6OAT.
QSL cards will be sent to holders of call signs that appear in the 52 WRTC =
=
computerized station logs. Each WRTC station using a 1=d71 call sign will h=
ave =
a unique QSL card. Those who bust the pileups will earn a customized, =
commemorative WRTC letter opener with endorsements for 10, 25,
50, 75, or 100 QSOs on any combination of bands and modes. Because
you can contact each of the 52 WRTC stations once on SSB and once
on CW on each of four bands, it is possible to make up to 416 QSOs.
Achieving a =22grand slam=22 by working all 52 call signs can earn you a
special commemorative deck of WRTC playing cards. WRTC T-shirts
go to the top 300 stations who make the most QSOs with WRTC teams.

awarded to amateurs in specific geographical areas who make the most
QSOs with WRTC team stations.

I believe Jim's out of town traveling for his company this week.
He mentioned the other day that due to inconsistencies in the FCC
database he's had to manually intervene frequently, so perhaps
something got wedged.
