ITU: NEW CALLSIGNS TO INCLUDE PUNCTUATION MARKS

GENEVA (1 April) - The International Telecommuications Union
(ITU) announced that starting today, it will expand the
available callsign blocks by introducing punctuation marks
as charcaters in radio station callsigns.  This has become
necessary as the number of newly-independent states has
exceeded the number-letter combinations hitherto used by the
ITU to distinguish radio stations around the world.  Four
new ITU members were allocated blocks of callsigns in the
new format which they may assisn to radio stations under
their jurisdiction.  The new allocations are as follows:
Gallardia - @AA to @ZZ; Grand Fenwick - #AA to #ZZ; 
Dispepsia - &AA to &ZZ; Republic of Madawaska !AA to !ZZ.
(Comment: Amateur callsigns would likely follow the format
@A1CW, &M3DX, etc.)

Several ITU member administrations have indicated that they
will follow the ITU's example and employ punctuation marks
to supplement the callsign blocks now available to them. 
Industry Canada has announced that starting 1 January 1999,
all new station licences issued to Radio Amateurs in the new
territory of Nunavut will bear VE# prefixes, and VE8
amateurs in the new territory can exchange their existing
calls for VE# at their option.  Effective today, IC will
begin issuing two-character suffix callsigns with !, @, $,
%, ^, &, *, ( and ) in all Canadian call areas.  IC will
also include these characters in morse code examinations for
the Amateur Service.

I have a question on mikes....I wonder if the mike that pilot uses (the =
thin headphone. microphones) are good for contest? anyone have any =
experience with this mikes?

Me too Rick... mine is an Alpha 78. But the problem raising all this 
commentary isn't either the 76 or the 78, but rather the pairs (and 
worse) of 8877s and such. There is a perfectly reasonable argument for 
such on RTTY: the 100% duty cycle thing; there is even a possibility 
that having the reserve PEP really DOES add to the REALLY instantaneous 
peaks without raising the measured (slowly/averaged) PEP our meters 
usually read. 

The primary problem I have with the 'truly high power' crowd is that 
4000-5000W OUTPUT is dishonest and illegal-and actually it is mainly 
with those who OPENLY-and apparently PROUDLY-flaunt it in the rest of 
our faces. That just isn't right, and it invites actions by the FCC that 
eventually will hurt ALL of us. Yes, it is just as wrong to run it 'in 
the dark', but at least the liklihood of repercussions affecting the 
rest of us are reduced. Thanks for your comments. 73

Hi Tom... Well, what can I say. The honest truth is that I CAN be a 
self-centered jerk-especially when I get passionate AND angry. I took 
your remarks personally, and replied in what was (meant to be, I admit) 
a snotty manner-but a truthful one. I really DO ask and reduce power the 
way I mentioned; I really WILL NOT knowingly exceed the power limit for 
any reason; and I never thought about the KIND of car simply because I 
MEANT to imply a car 'faster than the average car'... e.g a two-hole 
Alpha 77 of a car! 

I do not apologize for the impassioned attempt to plead what I see as an 
ABUSE OF PRIVILEGE by some, and an eventual threat to my own privileges 
to run 1500W when needed. The only guys I SHOULD be pissed at are the 
ones who not only run it, but FLAUNT it. They are the characterless 
people I impune would be willing to do anything they deemed necessary to 
win a contest or get a rare QSO.

I DO APOLOGIZE for taking it personal and dumping it in that manner 
(or lack of them) on you. No excuse sir. 73

Jim is exactly correct.  I was one of the ops for the TO5M operation to
Miquelon Is. in October 1995.  I was the one that handled all the
licensing.  For ANY/ALL of the French overseas territories, ANY callsign
having the prefix TO# can be chosen for a very limited amount of time and
for a special event like a contest.  This is the reason that the TO calls
are recycled so often.  Usually the special callsign is good for a maximum
period of 1 week.  The location has absolutely no bearing on the prefix.

Today 01/04/96 (isn't an April fool) I received my certificate for WPX 94 CW.
After received a lot of messages from people having trouble in getting WPX
certificate I send an E-mail to Steve Bolia, N8BJQ. I got no answer but I
get my certificate. And this is good. 

Thank you to anyone answerd me, thank you to the OM that gave me Bolia
E-mail, and above all thank you to Mr Bolia.
