Well, it's 4:11am and it's bedtime for bonzo. WE9V hit the sack at 1am, but
the rest of us continued to party till the wee hours. The last party suite
closed at 3:00am (SMC - Society of Midwest Contesters)... yes, the black hole
rules!!!
So, it was off not to the lobby suite.... but to the area in front of the
elevators on the 12th floor near the SMC suite. This elite group of late
night partiers included WN9JAT and 19-year-old daughter Michelle, 9X5EE,
WB2ZHB, and N0BSH, WX9E and me. The highlight definitely was Michelle, who
really seemed to like us ham radio dudes. I think she liked WX9E too, cause
he's still out there, while Mike and I are writing this (and then going to
sleep!!)
That's about it. WN4KKN finally arrived, and it was good to see him. NP4Z sa
ys he didn't get much sleep last night 'cause of K5ZD's snooring. Lots of
guys asking about the babe... glad I remembered to bring pictures! Blah,
blah, blah....

Inis Meain Island - EU-006 1995 IOTA Contest

After last years very enjoyable island Dxpedition to St. Tudwal's
(IOTA EU-106) off the GW coast ,the WestNet DX Group is again planning
a major effort in the IOTA contest in July, 1995.
The group will operate from Inis Meain Island (IOTA EU-006) from
Thursday July 27th to Tuesday August 1st. The Atlantic Island is located
off the West Coast of EI. Outside the contest the group will be active
on all bands and modes including amtor & pactor using the call EJ****??.
Operators for this year's WESTNET Island IOTA adventure include:-

Hello All,
among the qsl cards received from the buro this month were cards relating
to the following operations...
1992 Saltee Islands EU-103 EJ0SI
1993 Blasket Islands EU-007 EJ6FR & EJ3HA
All stations appearing in the logs of both these operations have long since
been qsl'ed via the buro system.All direct requests were also answered.
There may have been cross over with cards in the buro system and I hope
that by now anybody wanting a card has received same.However I still hold
cards and as many new people have discovered IOTA and may have found us in
an old log and may have mislaid or not received a card for the above
operations I will be happy to provide confirmation,however such requests
must be made directly to my callbook address.I will not respond to further
requests via the buro for the above operations.

OK, what's the truth? Just had a visit out here from a Hewlett-Packard
engineer friend of ours. He seemed concerned when he saw me shut off the
rig and computer after showing him some of the "toys" here in the shack.
Per him, at hp they NEVER trun off the PC's nor the lab test equipment. He
explained that the life of such things is estimated by the US Gov and
others on the basis of the numer of turn-on/turn-off cycles; also that
most of it only has a life expectancy of 5 or so years anyway!
He felt strongly I ought never turn any of this stuff off. I asked about
the hard drive spinning all the time in the computer. He said never mind,
the bearings are designed to last the expected life of the machine anyway!
Well what about the power consumed (my computer rig is so called "green
compliant", it sort of shuts down if nothing is used for 15 min or so;
however the hard drive keeps on spinning tho the monitor has gone dark and
does take a few seconds to come to life if the mouse is moved, for example
to wake the machine. Again, he claimed the in-rush of current at turn-on
was causing much more harm to the components via thermal shock, that the
cost would be higher in earlier maintenace/replacement cost, than the
cost of current used were all the stuff just left on anyway, all the time.
I know in the old days, DX'ers always left the rigs on, kept the
temperature constant, and the VFO's were, therefore, kept more stable.
But that is not supposed to be a problem with our new solid-state,
synthesized VFO's., etc.
So what do you do, leave them on or turn everything off? Which way will
all this expensive stuff have the longest life?

A couple of other factors add concern for me.
1. If there are frequent lightning storms in your area, even the best surge
protectors
will not help against the frequent power surges that will ZORCH the
equipment when
coming in the power line. Granted even if it is off a big surge could arc
over the power switch, but for me having equipment off is the best
protection when I am not
nearby during a storm.
2. Especially with monitors, there is an imcreased fire hazard if they are
on
and unattended. I had a failure of a 17 inch monitor at work that probably
wouldve
been a major fire had I not been there to turn it off.
When I am home. The packet cluster and logging computer is always going.
But
I shut everything off and disconnect all antennas when I leave.

Where I work there are about 100 computers, and about half of them get
turned off at night and about half run 24 hours a day. I asked our computer
maintenance fellow if he thought it made a difference or not and he said as
far as he could tell, it didn't matter either way. Not very scientific, but
perhaps useful. I turn mine off to save electricity and reduce the fire
hazard. Granted, a fire IN a computer must be pretty rare, but fire in the
wires supplying the current is all too common. Ask your local FD.

Been playing with Rufz for a few days, and I can now copy Polish and
Swiss calls in my sleep. Just noticed that my program, however, has no
Japanese or British calls in its enormous data base (13,000 calls). The
absence of difficult 2x3 Japanese calls certainly makes Rufz easier and
less realistic for guys like me who never run anyone but JA's anyway.
Also, all USA 1x2 and 1x3 'K' calls are missing. There are few 2x3 USA
calls. Where did this file come from?
Is my version of Rufz incomplete? Surely, this is not the same version
used for Morse contests in Europe.
BTW, my version of Rufz was configured for a initial PARIS speed of
100, unlike KR0Y's 150. (my top speed is a bunch lower than his, too!)
If anyone is collecting this info, my best score is 16,468/284. This
puny score is because ...[begin excuse]... I lived for years in Japan and
Britain and only entered domestic contests.
