It sounds like you have solved the problem.
Another good suggestion has been posted here before and that is to
resolder the pins with silver solder. An alloy of 95% tin and 5%
silver has a significantly higher melting point. This solder is
sometimes supplied in a non rosin-core form, so be sure to apply
rosin if that's the case.
The fundamental flaw is that the pins should never have been
terminated with a soldered connection in the first place. A weld
would be much more appropriate.
Does anyone know of a manufacturer which welds the pins?
