The Thuderbolt was really designed for the old CW operators running class C.
Few had SSB when it came out. And under those conditions it did run the legal limit of 1KW plate input.

I got one because my Elmer had one with a Ranger (no modulator tubes0) and HQ170 and just wanted to set up that combination.
I also have a Desk KW that I need to get on the air someday while we still have amateur radio. Or at least before they drop our max output to 5 watts so that we will not be knocking out the BPL networks.

Bill,
I was going to raise the HV in ours (its at work) 2 years ago when I was sweep testing ferrite cores for a new accelerator design. The T'bolt is original, but it ran out of poop at about 600 output watts. I found a Drake L4B power supply minus the RF unit, in someones junk box (again at work) and so I was rebuilding that as an outboard power supply, cap filter doubler for 2600-2800 VDC. However, I came to the same conclusion of Steve, that the output tuning cap would be popping a lot. Then I found an RF Plasma Products 1 kW amp, using 8877, and I was home free, solid 1.2 kW output class AB1, no problem.

So our T'bolt is back in storage, but it was fun firing it up and tuning it.
