Maybe because years ago the 3-500Z was more accessible for the amateur
industry regarding the cost (must consider the sockets also!) and
availability
and the amp complexity was lower (GG).
I am aware of some commercial HF amps containing 4CX250 manufactured
in the ex East Germany during the 70's and 80's using 4CX250B tubes
(the equivalent SRL460 tetrodes for the KN-1, 1 kw amplifier, four tubes
as finals; KN-5, 5 kw, four as drivers; KN-20, 20 kw, two as drivers).
But now...

but the 4CX800 and GS35 may be a better choice, unless you already
own the 4CX and their needed sockets.

Nothing wrong. Only that they are no more very linear for today's
standards (but still better than the 12V transistors).
