Hi Jeff,
It sounds like it is a bad connection somewhere. It should be a reasonably
easy fix.
Make a good physical exam and see what doesn't look like a solid connection.
maybe at the tube pins themselves (bottom) or further back to the
transformer connections.
The alpha 78 has a sub chassis that must be removed (or at least "tilted")
to see the bottom of the sockets.
