Comments:
I'm once again wondering if using a special call is a plus. Many operators came
back with P40 instead of P44. Perhaps 30 years of 'conditioning' is in play?
This was another weekend of elevated signal absorption close to the equator.
During my mid-morning (~15Z) only one signal (RU1A) was above S-8 and most were
S-5 to 6 on 20 meters. Things were even worse on 15 meters. Running LP (and/or
QRP) this weekend was to be very challenging under such conditions. You must be
ready for that dreaded CQ IN YOUR FACE response. Found 'timing' is everything -
using QSK a huge plus. Based upon prevailing conditions taking extended off
times during the morning doldrums was part of my strategy.
CQ WPX is all about points per QSO, and normally won or lost based upon how well
you manage 40 and 80 meters. I chose to stick with 40 meters most of both
nights sacrificing QSO rate and the overall totals. The 4 ele 40 meter wire
beam pointed at EU was particularly effective this weekend, the 3 ele 80 meter
wire beam was too but conditions were not good enough to support rate on 80
meters running LP from this part of the world. The noise impact of wide-spread
T-Storms across the entire USA was obvious.
Thanks to the CQ WPX organizers for all the hard work you do to make this a fun
and fair event. Looking forward to the next time.
73,
John, W2GD a.k.a. P40W
