Comments:
Between visits from our son and the three grandsons a day or two earlier in the
week, and then a big Thanksgiving for my wife and our Austin-based son, there
was no option for me to do a serious effort in the CQWW. In truth, I'm focusing
on domestic contests and the IARU, but the "Granddaddy of them all" is
special. Since my large 3-el yagi for 40 suddenly is kaput with an open
connection some where in the feedline, I was limited to the small Cushcraft 2-el
at about 50 feet in the (not) cranked up tower. So I played "DXer"
with the exception of two good morning runs into EU on 20. All in all, the
numbers below were a lot of fun and the overall time, which I could cherry-pick,
was six hours.
A couple of comments on my "fun DXing" time:
* Good to hear Richard, K5NA, on Top Band at PJ2T. I was committed to find him
and say hello.
* Pretty good EU opening on 160 Friday night.
* Usual JA openings on 80 both mornings. I did not want to run JAs or even call
many because it just triggers lots of QSLs.
* I don't know why people use call-signs like DL62EUDXF unless they are looking
for cruel and unusual punishment!
* Limited JA opening on 15 reminded me of the Good Old Days when the afternoon
JA run on 15 was worth nearly 1,000 contacts. Very thin this year but not zero.
* The most intriguing opening to me was the "over the North Pole"
opening on Sunday morning on 40 to EU from about 11:30-12:30Z, just before our
SRT. I'm not sure if I have experienced this before and would like someone to
explain the propagation science for this. Yes, the path was in the dark. Perhaps
it was just that simple to Northern EU, since my small number or
"DXer" QSOs included UA4, GM5, PI3, OZ5, M6, S5, RX1, OH6, LY4, a UA9,
and a UN5! That one is a pretty long path to the North just before the sun rose
here on 40 meters.
* Worked a VR2 on 80 at 12:49. That was a good SRT contact to Hong Kong.
