Comments:
Weather created a lot of problems here - in addition to the regular 12
hours of off time, I lost another couple of hours of operating time in
small 5 to 20 minute chunks as I tried to dodge the lightning. When
the thunder got loud enough to hear over the contest in the headphones
and with the windows closed, I would disconnect everything and power
down. Although I tried to use some of the normal 12 hour allocation
of off time for this purpose, if the thunder moved on in less than
fifteen minutes after I shut down, I restarted operating and did not
take off time. This probably cost about 100 Qs.
Of my 1865 QSOs, 724 were S&P. Ten meters was not as good here this
year, no Europeans heard on Saturday and only a handful of big stations
from Southern Europe heard on Sunday. Of course no JAs on 10 at this
time of year.
Short of moving South or East to get better propagation on 10 (South)
or 40 (East), I think I did as well as I can. My final score surpassed
my dreams of 3 meg, but it won't be good enough to win against the
better situated, multi-tower stations.
Station improvements made this year include a second OMNI VI+, used mostly
in this contest to monitor 10 to see whether it would open at all.
I switched to TRLOG so that the station switching is fully automated now.
Outside, I now have a homebrew six-pack (made with 24 relays, so it is
a "CASE") so I can use the second radio on real antennas. Finally, I
obtained a well-recognized, unique prefix call, KS9K.
My single (fully-loaded) tower now sports the following antennas:
40 - 402-CD @ 120'
20 - 5el, 48' boom @ 120' (40 interlaced on this boom)
5el, 48' boom @ 62' fixed on EU - finished Thursday before WPX CW
15 - 5el @ 130', 5el @ 99' on ring rotor, 5el @ 75' & 45' fixed on EU
the ring rotor new this past year
10 - 5el yagis interlaced on all 15 meter antennas
Having second antennas helped during the times I was dodging the weather,
as the QRN (sizzling electrical noise) would be only S2 on the lower
antennas while it would drown out the signals on the top rotarys at
120' and 130'.
Lots of OK stations would say "Hi Paul." They were the only ones to do
that. Zivney is a Czech name (Zivny) but that couldn't be it because
my first name is Terry, not Paul..... and I don't think "Paul Hellenberg"
(the former KS9K) sounds Czech!
