Comments:
This was my first ARRL DX SSB, my 4th contest overall, and it served to remind
me (again) that a vertical in the back yard just won't do the job for me.
Despite several tries, I was never able to run.... it was S&P the entire
time... a little tiring...but it did teach me some things. I had tried using
spots in a previous contest, and this time I tried it without... it was really
fun, just like the old days, finding the little treasures calling CQ, sometimes
hiding right under the edge of a big signal! I got a lot of good advice before
the test (thanks, everyone), and this simple plan evolved: I would tune 10 all
the way up and back, then do the same on 15. When 10 & 15 died, I went to 20.
When 20 became inpenetrable with my vertical, I went to bed until daylight and
started over. I didn't venture onto the lower bands, but the upper 3 bands were
fantastic and I was able to work almost everything I could hear. And WriteLog
made logging a complete breeze. Bottom line: Thanks, everyone, I had a real
good time and it was great to hear all the fine sigs and ops in there... but it
made me envious. I need some serious antenna work ASAP. Jerry K3MGT
