Equipment:
TH7 @ 50 feet, but more like 20 feet above the house...
TS-570DG with CW filter!!! YES!!! (first time with a real filter, from home
anyway)
Heathkit Warrior Amp... this thing is still working great, and it's a lot
older than I am
WL version 10.11 (I love this program... however the summary sheet needs a
bit of work still)
Comments:
I was thinking of going SOHP CW only in this one, but then I figured the
rate on cw might get pretty slow, so I would go Mixed. Then I thought, why
not go M/S with Dad? That would be cool. So that was the plan. But he
didn't make a single qso! So since I was using packet, I have to claim
M/S. I think I found 2 more mults because of it, but that's ok with me.
I thought things started off slow. The condx were awesome, but just
couldn't get a real good run going the first day. The first hour was only
150. After NA/SA/JA closed, the UA4's and the UP/UN's popped in later. It
was sounding really promising for EU later. But I royally screwed that one
up. I figured I would get a few hours sleep, then work EU at sunrise. But
no, the band opened up while I was snoozing. I missed the only real
opening of the contest. I did manage to catch the tail end of it after Dad
woke me up at 6am and said they were really loud. I worked a total of 4
stations. But it was good for the mults. Then the east coast came it REAL
early. Saturday was awesome. Just check out the rate sheet below. All
that with a low TH7. How fun!
I figured CW was the place to be when it was good, and SSB mainly for
mults, or when I ran cw dry. I think I did pretty well on figuring out
when to move to ssb. The last hour was the only place I screwed up.
Shoulda been on fone the whole time. CW was slooooooooow.
Anyway, no EU to speak of sunday morning, other than a super weak OT9T, and
a few G's. We had a pipeline to G land. I heard KL7RA and AL7IF working
tons of stuff I never heard over the pole, through out the whole contest.
Oh, to be at a big station a bit farther north...
This was a fun contest, and GREAT to have a cw filter... I can hear now!
Kind of hard to do phone with a cold, so dad went out and bought me 2 bags
of cough drops, and it helped a lot. I also found a neat trick. If your
nose is stuffed up, and you sound weird when you talk, and it's hard to do
ssb, get some of those Breath Right strips that go on your nose. I found
some in the bathroom, and they WORK. It did wonders. Even made sleeping
easier since I could breath.
Next year I will be at a big station, hopefully outside of AK. (That is, if
I get accepted to a college outside of AK.. hehe) This is not an Alaskan
friendly band! I need to start thinking of where I'll do this one.
QSL via NU4N if you happen to need a qsl card.
73!
