I placed third last year and am just hoping to make the top 10 this year!
I operated much better this year than last but here at W0SD what we were
concerned about in regards to an increasing sunspot cycle is happening.
During the low part of the cycle in contests such as SS, 160, ARRL RTTY
Roundup and 10 meter contest we often made the top 5. With better sunspots
we struggle to even make the top 10. It is just a function of propagation.
Lately the Southwest and as always the south are the places to be!!!
Looking at the rates they start earlier and go longer and during the better
propagation times they just work more stations.

I was please with my country total at 84 from up north and also pleased
with 61 multiplers. For what I could hear I though over 2000 Q's was
absolutely unbelieveable. I was also satisfied with the number of Europe
and Asia worked. Here in the middle no matter where we point the beam
other than south we have QRM. I had to go way high in the band to work
Europe and Asia otherwise the "SPLATTER" just made it impossible. My only
chance is some good sporadic E next year because if it is primarily F layer
propagation it just isn't going to happen up north!

Only mistake I probably made was not moving down lower right after the
Europe opening both days. I did go lower but likely not quick enough. I
was a tough decision to go lower as I am sure I worked 400 stations on
"SCATTER" and most were terribly hard to copy so if I'd been lower in the
band there is "NO WAY" I would of worked these stations so it is a catch
22. To those who called and I was not able to work you I apologize. Five
elements up high/1500 watts using 7/8" heliax just produces a lot more
scatter than a small beam down low with 100 watts.

Congratulations to the 2500+ QSO stations!!! Even with good propagation
that is a "LOAD"! You did well!!! The WB0W and W0AIH effort from up North
I though were outstanding!!!
