W7GG 1998 CQWW SSB SCORE AND STORY.
COMMENTS: This was one of my better efforts in a long time. A tribute
to the propagation Gods, more than anything else!! After 3 years of
heavy effort finally getting my station 98% complete helped as well.
As a result of this test I now, however, know where my station weaknesses
are.......20M and 80M. My triple stack of KT-34XA's don't seem to compete
very well on 20M but do seem pretty good on 15=20M on 10-15M. 15M SWR in
the phone band bad as well. Gotta get better performance on 20M so may
dump the KT's before next season!
Conditions better for the most part but down a lot from where I had hoped
they would be by now in the new cycle. WWW numbers of 110-13-5 not very
encouraging from the NW part of the country. My EU production on 40M was
down from other tests.....polar path down and other sigs on a skewed path
although mebbe I was not on the band at the right times. Could not even
work DF0HQ, seems like he was having trouble hearing anyone. V8A (think
thats the call) from Brunei never would listen up. Heard he did after
West Coast sunrise but if your operating all bands need to be some where
after daylight comes.
Had weird noise on 10M and other bands that I have not heard before at
my remote location. Local consensus is that it was driven by conditions
over the pole. No 10m and very little 15M ECU openings at my QTH. If
anyone else have a similar noise experience I would like to hear from them.
On the plus side 10M was great to Africa and of course JA. 10M top SO
producer for me. 15M JA activity great as well. Opened with the run
radio on 15M, had 400 ISO's before I got up to take a pee! Reminds my of the
hay days of the last cycle.
Hi Lite was working within a half hour or so Saturday 10 juicy African
stations. (9J2,9G1,TR8, TZ6,3DA0, ZS, EA8, D44, C56, ZD8) No polar
path to Africa from Oregon so they were loud and easy to work....all
were operating well above 28.5mhz!
Nice to hear all the China stations.....they now into the prefix game
with calls like B1A and BW0 etc. AD1C CTY file not like BW0 though,
tried to put it in zone 23....wish it were zone 23...would have helped
my mult count. Mebbe China will turn into another JA gold mine as their
standard of living improves. If so it would help the Left Coast compete
with the East Coast?
Was planning on a more productive 2 radio experience but was not properly
setup for it. Need a mike interface to switch btwn the two radios. A hand
mike on radio two did not cur it. Also, found that I had very little time
to use the second radio except to check band conditions. What ever happened
to the universal two radio control switch that was rumored to become
available?? Actually, I prefer CW contesting to SSB so have some work to do
for phone tests.....like interface my voice keyer to the computer etc. .
Endured 158 USA calls....seems like few have a clue re the rules. I rcvd
Grid Square from one op and another asked "what is a CQ zone? Hate to
discouraged their desire to help so put them all in the log and moved on.
Quicker to do that than explain the rules.
Even tho I felt pretty good about my effort it will only place me 3rd in
Oregon.....Hats off to Lew, W7AT for his fine performance...think he got
more sleep than me to boot! Also congrats to Dick, K4XU for his effort..
My stats are listed below for anyone interested.......
