Soapbox Comments:
Not much eventful this time, but we'll ramble here just for fun.
Started the contest, and I was stunned by the impressive band
conditions. Had a bad start on 20 CW, so decided to take a stab at 20
SSB. I was stumped at 20 SSB, because my DVK (not a W9XT card)
failed. So, I *accidentally* spent an hour banging my head wondering
why.. By then, it was time for my bowling tourney, so I pulled the
plug. 5PM I'm back in the op chair, and manage to make a few more
contacts on 20 CW. Again, the majority of the contacts that hour on
phone. I then had to QRT for Homecoming Dance 1997. Took an hour and
a half dressing for that... Didn't get back into the op. chair until
0900 UTC, where I was dead tired from dancing the nite away. Made a
few CW contacts on 40 for the first time. I went back to bed. Tired
as a skunk. Didn't wake up until 1200 UTC, where I made more CW
contacts than I did phone. The rest of the day went quite well. I
went from 47 Q's that morning to my end total of 158. I think that
this is pretty impressive considering my main 20-15M antenna was a
dipole no more than 3 ft. off the ground! More room for improvement
though.
Lessons Learned:
(1) Buy a W9XT Contest Card!
(2) Stock up on cough drops
(3) Ask the Homecoming date to operate 20 CW!
(4) Have a multiop so if you're tired, the others can take over. (5)
Get a better antenna! Propagation at times sucked to W6, but was
really nice to W4 (6) Have more patience with lids
Seriously, this contest was a pretty good show for this station. I'm
used to getting an avg. of 50 QSO's per contest from here. But,
during the past few months of operating from here, my average is now
around 125.. We're improving!
Thanks for a GREAT experience! This weekend was very special to me
and my H.C. date. 73's and C U in CQWW SSB!
GO SMC!
