I have an inverted L antenna resonant on 80m, I decided to add a loading coil to the base to bring it on frequency for TopBand. I wound a 2.5mm wire coil 16 turns on a bit of square Paxoline board by

The current at the base of the inverted L antenna does most of the radiating. It would be better to some-how lengthen the 'far end' of the wire to achieve resonance, without the loading coil at the n

I would not in general expect fiberglass board to have high loss at 160M. Regular non-UV rated fiberglass is a glass-reinforced polyester with styrene. HOWEVER... if this is some UV-rated fiberglass,

Just chopped the fibreglass webs out and now no change, I would not have thought it would affect this coil, so something else must have altered since two days ago (Had to work) affecting the way the

The quantity, and within reason, the quality of coil formers does not make a difference that could be measured by any but the most advanced methods. Most certainly there'll be no measurable differenc

The added wire does not have to go in a straight line,    If both 80 and 160 meters are needed, you could use a trap at the end of the wire now in use. Then enough zig-zag wire to resonate it to 160

If you got an SWR of 1.2 on 160 meters from an 80 meter inverted L, you had a lot of loss either in the radial system or in the loading coil. The resistive part of the feedpoint impedance of that ant

Ideas what to do next Borrow an antenna analyzer and measure the antenna's feedpoint impedance with a very short piece of coax (in other words, right at the base) with and without the coil. 73, Jim K

Jim, I have an Rig Expert AA-200 analyser, which is excellent for this sort of thing, shows a proper swr plot on the screen, better than the MFJ unit. On 80m at 3637kHz, swr = 1.4:1, R 35.3, Z 35.3,
