You might want to try turning off the K3's AGC under those condx, just as an experiment. In similar circumstances, I've found turning off AGC alleviates this "noise modulation" effect. 73, Barry N1EU

Mike, I remember Earl Cunningham, K6SE (SK) did a comparison between the K-2 and the Icom 746PRO and came to the conclusion that the Icom 746 Pro was a much better weak signal performer. At that time
